County Business Patterns excludes the self-employed with no employees, which in trades like photography, graphic design and personal training is most of the people doing the work. Say 'businesses with employees' when the trade is one of those. `avg_pay_per_worker_usd` is total annual payroll divided by employees and INCLUDES the owner if they are on payroll, so it is not an entry-level wage and must never be quoted as one. A null there means the Bureau suppressed the cell to protect an identifiable employer — it does not mean zero, and the honest answer is that it is not published. Percentage changes are measured 2019 to 2023 and that window contains 2020, so read `path` before calling anything a trend: some of these fell in 2020 and recovered, and some have fallen in every single vintage. QCEW COUNTS JOBS COVERED BY UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, which is a different population from the County Business Patterns counts beside it: the two offices publish on different schedules, on different reference periods, and neither is a correction of the other. Read the column labels — the business counts are the Census Bureau's for 2023 and earlier, the employment and wage are the Bureau of Labor Statistics' for 2025 Q4. A WAGE IS ABSENT, NEVER ZERO. The Bureau suppresses any cell that would identify an employer and ships a literal 0 in the numeric columns when it does; every one of those is discarded here, so 734 of 905 trades carry no wage at all rather than a wrong one. A trade whose wage is blank is a trade the Bureau would not disclose, never a trade that pays nothing. A wage ships only where the counties that DID disclose hold at least 90% of that trade's establishments — a floor measured by simulating suppression against the trades every county disclosed, where it holds the error inside 3.2% at the 90th percentile — and `wage_basis_pct` on each row says what share it was built from. THE WAGE IS THE METRO'S, REBUILT RATHER THAN AVERAGED: total quarterly wages over total employment over thirteen weeks, which is how the Bureau defines it. Averaging seven county averages would weight Carver the same as Hennepin.",
